I'm a big fan of the Ubiquiti UniFi networking gear, I wrote about how I was able to use their gear to provide micro-segmentation of my IoT devices from the rest of my network. If there's a space, then there's a space and resolution will fail. Finally, even if you specify an alias via the USG configuration, that alias will be ignored in favor of the way the host identified itself to the DHCP server initially no matter how broken, like having spacesand resolution will fail.

I eventually gave up on Ubiquiti ever properly fixing this issue. I, and others, reported it in NovemberUbiquiti claimed, multiple times, to be fixing it and never did. I have several servers on my network, so constantly accessing them by IP address is just too much of an inconvenience.

There is pretty good documentation from Synology on configuring your NAS for DNS, but I ran into several issues for proper configuration, so I decided to write this post to document how I was successful. Now that you have the DNS Server installed and running, it's time to configure it properly.

A Master Zone specifies that this server is authoritative for all of the Zone Records contained within it. A Secondary Slave Zone specifies that this server is authoritative, but is receiving the records from a remote server the Master.

I personally check Limit zone transfer and then leave it blank, which is effectively preventing any Zone Transfers from your server which is as it should be. I also Limit source IP servicebut for this one you'll have to go into the Source IP List and configure hosts or subnets that are allowed to query this zone.

If you forget to do that and have this checked, your server will not respond. Resource records provide the translation from a human-readable name to an IP address and vice versa. To create a resource record in your Master Forward Zone:.

If this happens you'll have to manually create the NS record on the zone by doing the following:. A Reverse Zone is what translates IP addresses back into the names. This type of zone is optional, but it provides the ability for hosts to get human-readable names for connections that are made to it e.

Website operators use technology such as cookies or JavaScript applications to record the behavior of visitors. The data obtained here is used to optimize the website and personalize the content without users actively disclosing personal details.

Many users increasingly rely on ad and JavaScript blockers and proxies or delete history and cookies to put an end to data collection and protect their own privacy. However, very few users are aware that the operating system also saves information about surf behavior: for example, the automatically generated DNS cache contains temporary entries about all visited websites.

The following sections explain exactly what this cache is all about and why there are several reasons to delete the DNS cache regularly. For this reason, operating systems like Windows and macOS attach their own cache for called and resolved addresses — the DNS caches. Within this time, corresponding queries are answered directly from the cache without requiring a detour to the DNS server. Various applications, such as web browsers or name servers from internet service providers, also have their own DNS cache for speeding up name resolution.

The various — partially optional — components include the following:. The DNS cache contains IP addresses for the respective domains or hosts as well as additional information specifying it — such as the validity period of the record or the appropriate protocol group.

For example, an entry for the domain www. As mentioned earlier, it makes sense to clear the DNS cache regularly. There are three reasons in particular that you should take action and set the DNS register to zero with a DNS flush, regardless of the actual validity period of the individual records:. You can display the DNS cache currently stored on your system at any time.

A command line message will inform you of the success of the DNS flush. The command prompt works in the same way on Windows 10, and the procedure hardly differs from that of Windows 7 and 8: in the first step, use the search function to look for the command line application cmd. If the process has functioned as desired, then the command prompt confirms the success of the flush process.

The different distributions only offer a function to store DNS information locally with the use of appropriate applications like nscd n ame s ervice c aching d aemonpdnsd, dns-clean, or dnsmasq.

If you use one of these services for caching, you have to control it from the terminal in order to clear the cache. To clear the DNS cache from dnsmasqdns-cleanor ncsdthough, you need to completely restart the respective service:.

You need to enter at least one DNS address. Most Linksys routers don't require a restart for these DNS server changes to take effect, but if the router admin page asks you to, do it.

Not all Linksys routers use this address.

Linksys makes small changes to its administration page every time the company releases a new series of routers, so if the procedure above doesn't work for you, the instructions you need are in your manual. Follow any additional prompts about restarting your router.

If you don't get any, your changes should now be live. While you can access most D-Link routers via You should be able to access the configuration page for most Asus routers with the If you've never changed your sign-on information, try using admin for both the username and the password.
