Taking place over roughly half a year, it follows college student Dani who, reeling after the brutal death of her family, joins her boyfriend and his friends on a trip to Sweden to take part in a midsummer festival. The film has been a definite hit, not least for its very well-written characters and original storyline and setting.
However, part of what seems to be playing to the film's success is its layers and layers of detail. Lots of films will have hidden meanings with the intention being that you notice more and understand more about the plot with each viewing.
This list will look at ten of the hidden meanings in the film and how they might change what we think of the movie as a whole—spoilers ahead. Updated by Madison Lennon on March 4, Midsommar was one of the most notable and talked about horror films released last year. It solidified Ari Aster as a horror director to watch after his previous critically-acclaimed film, Hereditary. Since the movie released, fans have poured over the film hoping to find subtext, hidden details, foreshadowing, and clues about the story and its themes.
We decided to update this list with a few more hidden details since there is a lot to find. Fans of Ari Aster may have begun to notice a trend of seeing head trauma in his movies. In Hereditaryone of the most disturbing and shocking scenes in the film depicted Charlie getting her head lopped off by a telephone pole when she stuck her head out the window.
In Midsommarwe see the aftermath of the ritual suicide scene and several grisly closeups of a smashed head. According to an article from EsquireAster likes to use images that terrorized him as a child. He also stated that he will never stop using gory head trauma shots in his movies so prepare yourself accordingly. In the film, Mark freaks out about ticks. Several of the other characters tease him about this but it is based on Ari Aster's real-life fear of ticks.
As we mentioned in the above entry, Aster loves to base things in his stories on his own life. Some people cope with trauma and their fears by using them in their art, and Aster is definitely that type of person. He would also wear at least two pairs of socks while walking in places known for ticks to try and keep them from latching on to him. Not many people may have understood what was going on during Simon's death scene.
His body was shown flayed alive with his lungs extended like wings in an extremely visceral and gory way. The film only gives viewers a brief look, enough to horrify you but not to fully absorb what you're seeing. The cult had used an ancient Norse ritual execution known as the Blood Eagle to kill Simon. The Woman Who Was Burned Alive By A Drunk Driver - The Oprah Winfrey Show - Oprah Winfrey Network
It's made even more terrifying because Simon was alive when it happened and even still when Christian found him. It wasn't just his lungs pulled out either but we won't go farther into describing it you can always pause the film if you want a closer look. It can be easy to miss what happens to Mark on your first watch through the film since there is so much going on. Remember the scene where Josh sneaks out at night to take a forbidden photo of the cult's hidden book?
He gets confronted by someone wearing a terrifying mask, but what you might have missed is that the mask he's wearing is of Mark's skin. Earlier in the film, a group of people was playing a game called "skin the fool," which Mark asks a question.Mountain rose herbs
He literally becomes the skinned fool after he pees on the sacred tree branch and gets lured away by a woman to his fate. This is a hidden detail in the trailer and not the movie itself, but during the official trailer for Midsommarthe editors gave fans a little fakeout.
During the above screenshot, we get a glimpse at the infamous final scene of the movie where bodies are filed into the temple and set on fire. Except, as you can see, the trailer version is very different from the real one.
Eagle-eyed fans in the YouTube comments and other online forums spotted out this detail. Instead of seeing the bear or the weird bodily arrangements of the other Americans, we just see big hazmat-like suits, making it seem less sinister than the real scene.
At first, it appears that the tapestry is depicting the passing of the seasons with two scary faces marking the middle of winter and summer. Before the plot has even begun, we are given a sense that everything has been pre-planned, as though everything that you are about to see is as natural as the passing of the seasons.Ari Aster's new horror film Midsommar has an ending that's about as horrifying as you'd expect from the writer-director who made last year's Hereditary.
Looking for an escape, Dani follows her boyfriend Christian Jack Reynor on a trip with his friends to a folk festival in Sweden, run by a commune that Christian's friend Pelle Vilhelm Blomgren grew up in. However, things take a dark turn during the first ceremony, when two elders of the commune commit ritualistic suicide.
As Dani and Christian's friends begin disappearing one by one, it becomes clear that there's something very dark going on behind the scenes of the Midsommar festivities. In the final ceremony of the Midsommar festival, nine human sacrifices are made in the yellow pyramid-shaped temple that Dani was told not to enter. The sacrifices are an offering of life in exchange for life, and every year the May Queen chooses the final and most important sacrifice.
Dani chooses Christian to be sacrificed, and he is sewn into a bear skin and placed at the center of the temple. The life of each member of the community is divided into four seasons, each lasting 18 years. They return to the commune and work from ages 36 to 54 falland from ages 54 to 72 winter they lead the community as elders.
Those who don't die during the fall are killed afterwards by being struck repeatedly on the head with a large wooden mallet. The dead bodies are then cremated and the ashes are scattered around a sacred ancestral tree. As Midsommar moves towards its ending, all of Dani and Christian's friends have unbeknown to them been killed.
Maja hides a love rune under Christian's bed and bakes her pubic hair into a pie that he eats. During the May Queen celebrations, Christian is given a drink with hallucinogenic properties, and then flower petals are laid out to create a path for him to the barn where Maja is waiting.
Whomever is left standing last is declared that year's May Queen - and this Midsommar, that person is Dani. She is given a flower crown and pride of place at the May Queen feast, and then taken to bless the harvest and animals.
She peers through the door, sees Christian having sex with Maja, and begins crying hysterically. In Midsommar 's ending we see the final part of the festival's twisted traditions, as nine human sacrifices are offered up to the gods in exchange for nine new lives, in the form of babies conceived during the Midsommar celebrations.
By the end of the movie, four of the new blood sacrifices have already been made: British visitors Connie and Simon, and Christian's friends Josh and Mark. It's heavily implied that Pelle's own parents were sacrificed in their own time, as Pelle tells Dani that they burned in a fire when he was a child.403 forbidden error in postman
Due to Christian's drugged-up state, the lungs appear to be breathing. Christian is caught and has a powder blown in his face that paralyzes him, rendering him unable to speak or move. The bodies of the other sacrifices are also brought to the temple and placed around the walls. One of Josh's legs has been cut off and, as Christian saw earlier, buried in the garden like a flower. Meanwhile, the only thing left of Mark is his skinned face and scalp, which has been placed on a straw dummy and given a jester's hat.
Christian, who is still paralyzed, makes no sound as he burns to death inside the bear skin, but Ingemar and Ulf scream as the fire consumes them. Dani staggers around in her May Queen costume, sobbing, but eventually calms down and then smiles as she watches the temple burn - which is where Midsommar ends.

Since Dani had the option to spare her boyfriend and have a stranger be the centerpiece of the sacrifice at the end of Midsommarsome way wonder why she specifically decides to kill Christian. The answer to that is complex, but a good place to start is the fact that Dani isn't exactly in her right mind at the end of the movie. She's been given drugged tea that's causing her to have strange visions, danced to the point of exhaustion, and experienced the emotional trauma of seeing Christian have sex with another woman, followed by a release of emotion with her newfound sisters.
By the time she's on stage in her enormous flowery gown, Dani looks pretty out of it, but the one thing she does seem to be aware of is that Christian has hurt her.Justin Chang.
In the viscerally unnerving films of Ari Aster, there's nothing more horrific than the reality of human grief. His haunted-house thriller, Hereditaryfollowed a family rocked by traumas so devastating that the eventual scenes of devil-worshipping naked boogeymen almost came as a relief. Aster's new movie, Midsommardoesn't pack quite as terrifying a knockout punch, but it casts its own weirdly hypnotic spell. This is a slow-burning and deeply absorbing piece of filmmaking, full of strikingly beautiful images and driven less by shocks than ideas.
It's not interested in frightening you so much as seeping into your nervous system. And like HereditaryMidsommar is very much rooted in loss.Purebred boer goats
It begins with a young American woman named Dani, played by the great English actress Florence Pugh, panicking over a family emergency that moves swiftly toward its worst possible outcome. As she tries to pick up the broken pieces of her life, Dani seeks solace from her boyfriend, Christian, and is surprised to learn that he's about to go on a trip with some of his grad-school buddies. They're headed to a remote Swedish commune that is holding a nine-day festival to observe the summer solstice.
Dani presses him about why he didn't tell her earlier, and an argument ensues. The handsome Irish actor Jack Reynor clues you in to the selfishness beneath Christian's quiet, sensitive-sounding demeanor.
Dani doesn't know that he was about to end their four-year relationship before tragedy struck, and he's only staying with her now out of a sense of obligation. Christian reluctantly invites her to join him in Sweden, and she accepts, to the irritation of some of his friends, who don't want his mopey girlfriend along to spoil their fun. They fly to Sweden and, after a few hours' drive, arrive at a remote, centuries-old village where they are greeted by about 60 men and women wearing white robes embroidered with mysterious symbols.
Aster has a gift for dreaming up fictitious subcultures, and he visualizes these ancient customs and artifacts with an almost anthropological attention to detail.
But then the mood takes a sinister turn and Dani and Christian's traveling companions start to disappear. The story owes a clear debt to The Wicker ManRobin Hardy's horror classic about a pagan fertility cult, but Midsommar is more ambiguous and slower to come into focus. This is a nightmare that unfolds in broad daylight, under a midnight sun that bears down relentlessly on the landscape. The sun could almost be a metaphor for Dani's grief, something ever-present and all-consuming, especially since Christian seems to take so little interest in consoling her.
Aster has said that he was inspired to write Midsommar after the end of a long-term relationship, and that Dani's experience is a fictionalized version of his own. Whatever the real-life details, he's made the ultimate bad-boyfriend movie, a withering portrait of emotional neglect that has nothing nice to say about Christian, his petty-minded friends or, indeed, the state of contemporary American masculinity.
Among other things, Midsommar is a wickedly funny movie about the clash between pagan traditions and the ways of the modern world. Sex and death, a source of so much pain and anxiety in the outside world, are here just part of life's unending cycle. Midsommar is in no rush to solve its many mysteries. The third act is full of surreal images of revelry and ritual sacrifice, plus a sex scene that's as hilarious as it is appalling.Ark spawnsetupdino
What you remember most is Pugh's quietly mesmerizing performance. Your sympathies are with Dani at every moment, and so are the movie's. Toward the end she fixes the camera with an extraordinary look of terror and exultation, as she beholds the stunning fate that awaits her.Midsommar represented another feather in the cap for upcoming writer and director Ari Aster.
The visit began well, but it soon descended into chaos thanks to the intervention of a violent and murderous pagan cult. The film was generally well-received by critics and fans, and it is definitely worth a watch. Distribution rights for the film in the US are currently held by A24 films. However, the deal did not preclude A24 from producing and acquiring films outside the deal. Neither did it void any deals that A24 had with other companies.
